The Bialetti Moka Express is an Italian aluminium stovetop coffee maker with over 100 years of tradition. Its octagonal base ensures even heat distribution for richer espresso, a significant upgrade from instant or filter coffee. Using ground coffee, water, and heat, it produces a thick, full-bodied espresso-style coffee with intense flavour. Bialetti's Moka Ground Coffee is recommended for an authentic Italian taste.

Cup sizes are based on the traditional 2oz (60ml) taza; for a standard mug, a 3 or 4 cup Moka Express is suggested, while the 6 cup is a best-seller for two mugs. This espresso base is ideal for beverages like lattes, which can be made by adding heated and frothed milk (even using a cafetiere and microwave). A 3-step guide to using the Moka Express is available, taking around 7 minutes including brewing time.

Suitable for gas and electric hobs, induction stovetops require a compatible Bialetti maker or adapter plate. Only ground coffee and water are needed; freshly ground whole beans (slightly coarser than espresso, finer than cafetiere) are best. Bialetti also offers pre-ground Moka Coffee. The durable Moka Express is designed to last, with spare parts like gaskets and filters (recommended replacement every 12 months) available. As the official UK partner, we can help source any parts. Water quality is important; filtered water is ideal to prevent limescale. If not using filtered water, clean with vinegar and water; avoid chemicals. Bialetti is a sustainable brand, producing durable aluminium makers and offering spare parts, eliminating the need for solvent-based cleaners.

Bialetti Moka Express

FAQs

For best results, you should use a consistent, fine to medium-fine grind size in your Bialetti Moka Express; not as fine as espresso but finer than you would use in a cafetiere, similar to the Bialetti Moka Ground Coffee. Or grind fresh at home with whole bean coffee and an espresso grinder. We would recommend the Bialetti Perfetto Moka coffee that has been roasted and ground specifically for stovetop coffee makers.

Cleaning your Bialetti Moka Express is relatively simple and an important step to prolonging the life of your coffee maker. Fill the boiler with hot water (3 parts) and vinegar (1 part) and place on the hob until liquid appears. Repeat this step two more times, without the vinegar, and finally rinse under running water. Ensure all parts are thoroughly dry before putting them away to be stored. If you do not dry thoroughly it will cause discolouration in the water chamber but the product will still work. This is not covered by the Bialetti guarantee.

No, the Bialetti Moka Express cannot be used on an Induction stove - it’s an aluminium product with an octagonal base which won’t connect to an induction stove. Bialetti have released a range of induction-friendly stovetop coffee makers, as well as an induction plate which sits on your stovetop so you can continue to use your Moka Express.

Yes, replacement parts can be bought for your Bialetti Moka Express, including the gasket, filter and handle. Unfortunately we don’t sell the base, pot or plastic knob as individual products. Browse our full range of Spare Parts.

Yes, the original Moka Express is made in Coccaglio near Bergamo. Bialetti have recently invested in their Italian factory to ensure a high quality of craftsmanship while being able to meet demand.

This depends on usage. If you clean the components on a regular basis then it will prolong the life of the gasket and filter. Typically we recommend changing the gasket and filter every 12 months.

You should fill the lower chamber to just below the safety valve or to the max fill line. Not all models have a max fill line. You should only use the product for making the amount of coffee that is suited to the size. If you have a 6 cup you should use the correct amount of coffee and water to make 6 cups, you can’t simply half the amount of coffee and water.

Disappointing

I have been using generic no-name copies of this for many years. They suffer from weak handles and messy pouring. So I finally decided to invest in the real thing. The handle and pouring are much improved, but the coffee production is very inconsistent - sometimes it just sputters even when I've really tightened it all up. The build quality of the large outer parts is good, but the internals seem very thin and weak. I have returned to using my cheap generic version for good coffee and this Bialietti will be gracing the shelves of a local charity shop.
